Telegram Referral Bot: How It Works and How to Set It Up
How referral links work on Telegram, what kinds of reward structures exist, and how to protect a referral program from fraudulent activity.
A referral program is one of the cheapest ways to attract customers: you pay not for ad impressions, but for the customers you bring in. On Telegram, these programs are especially convenient—it’s easy to share a link to the bot in any chat.
How a referral link works on Telegram
Every bot has an address like t.me/имя_бота. You can add a parameter to it: t.me/имя_бота?start=КОД. When a person opens such a link and clicks “Start,” the bot receives the /start command along with a code and recognizes who invited them.
The code is the inviter’s identifier. It’s usually generated randomly so that it can’t be used to identify someone else’s account.
Reward Schemes
- A percentage of a friend’s top-ups or purchases. The referrer receives, for example, 10% of each top-up. This works over the long term: the more active the friend, the higher the income.
- A fixed bonus for registration or the first purchase. Simple to explain, but easier to game.
- Multiple levels. Not only does the referrer receive a percentage, but so does the person who referred them (2nd level)—usually a smaller amount, such as 10% + 3%.
- Bonus for both parties. The person who was invited also gets something—a discount on their first purchase or a bonus. People are much more likely to click on links like this: “Get a discount” sounds better than “Sign up using my link.”
Protection Against Fraud
Any rewards program attracts people who want to get a bonus without buying anything. Basic rules:
- Award bonuses only based on real money. Bonuses should come from deposits and purchases, not from sign-ups or other bonuses.
- Don’t allow users to invite themselves. Verify that the referrer and the referred user have different accounts.
- Set caps. Limiting the bonus amount reduces the benefit of having multiple accounts.
- Don’t create endless levels. Two levels is a reasonable maximum; beyond that, the program starts to resemble a pyramid scheme and eats into your profit margin.
- Keep a log of credits—this makes it easier to resolve disputed cases.
What Else Helps a Referral Program Work
- A “Share” button in the bot and on the website that automatically inserts the referral code into the link.
- Clear statistics for participants: how many friends they’ve referred and how much they’ve earned.
- A reminder at the right moment—immediately after a successful purchase, people are more likely to recommend the store.
How to Get Started
You can add a referral system to an existing bot or use a ready-made project that already includes one: links with codes, commission calculations, statistics, and protection against fraudulent activity. Check out ready-made bots for Telegram and an article on launching a store bot.
FAQ
What percentage should you offer through the referral program?
Use your profit margin as a guide: the total amount of all commissions (including second-tier commissions and bonuses for invited users) shouldn’t eat into your profits. A common structure is 5–10% on a friend’s deposits and a lower percentage for the second tier.
Is it possible to find out who referred a user if they came through the website rather than via a bot?
Yes, if the website stores the referral code from the link and passes it along during registration. This way, the referral counts even if the person first browsed products and registered later.
Is the referral program legal?
Rewarding users for referring customers is a standard marketing practice. Do not promise income solely for recruiting people who do not actually make purchases: such schemes resemble pyramid schemes.
